What Is Pili?

And will skin care consumers go nuts over this moisturizing ingredient?

The cornerstone of indie brand Pili Ani skin care is a hand-pressed pili oil derived from the Philippines’ Pili Tree, known locally as the “chosen tree.”  Created by environmentalist Rosalina Tan who worked with local farmers, the naturally luxe line—which recently landed stateside— is designed to deliver incredible hydration through five nutrient-dense SKUs that are packed with natural antioxidants, essential fatty acids and vitamins, said the company.

Tan corresponded with Happi about this ingredient on the rise and how it is fitting into the skin care scene.

Happi: What types of ingredients do consumers want in their skin care products and what are their benefits?

RT: Recent trends show that more and more people are interested in and learning more about the benefits of natural ingredients over chemically laced ingredients. That is why we have combined key plant-based active ingredients that come from different parts of the world; i.e., Korean Akebia fruit, white truffle, beetroot. Our actives have all been carefully studied to provide the best results for naturally beautiful skin.

Happi: Are you seeing any leading trends in anti-aging, anti-acne or sun protective skin care products this season?

RT: Yes. We’re seeing unique active ingredients in the anti-aging field. Specifically, elemi oil. Known for its firming capabilities, this amazing ingredient, from the bark of the Pili Tree, and found within our Beauty Elixir Facial Milk Serum, is rich in antioxidants and fights environmental damage from free radicals.

Happi: What are some rising trends in skin care for 2018 and how do active ingredients play a role?

RT: Our fearless forecast is that pili and elemi oils will be one of the leading trends in the global market in 2018. Not only for the incredibly effective moisturizing, firming and antibacterial properties, especially powerful when used together, but for their exotic and rare origin. This desire for quality ingredients that perform, conservation, working with local farmers and advocating for organic ingredients are key elements within the Pili Ani brand. This is a trend that will be here to stay.
